Simulating the brain with the Brain Simulation Platform (BSP)

August 31

This short course will introduce the students to the Brain Simulation Platform (BSP) of the Human Brain Project (HBP), with the main aim to extend its access to the average user from a variety of communities in the field of Computational Neuroscience. After the course, students will be able to use the BSP and access HPC systems to configure and run a simulation, to visualize and analyse simulation results, and to form collaborative groups interested in exploring scientific issues of common interest.

Plenary lectures

  1. Welcome and introduction to the Human Brain Project (HBP) – M. Migliore (10 min)
  2. An overview of the HBP Brain Simulation Platform – L. L. Bologna (35 min)
  3. Electrophysiological feature extraction (theory) – R. Migliore (25 min)
  4. Single cell modeling and circuit modeling at a glance – M. Migliore (25 min)
  5. Single cell optimization – C. A. Lupascu (25 min)

Hands-on tutorials

  1. Electrophysiological feature extraction (practice) – R. Migliore (40 min)
  2. How to build your own cell model – C. A. Lupascu (40 min)
  3. How to simulate a single cell and a small circuit – L. L. Bologna (30 min)
  4. Concluding remarks – M. Migliore (10 min)

Requirements for attending the event

  • Basic knowledge of neuronal electrophysiology
  • Basic knowledge of neural modelling (basic knowledge of the NEURON simulator is advisable but not required)
  • Basic knowledge of Python programming (advisable but not required)
  • A user account on the HBP Collaboratory platform (collab.humanbrainproject.eu). If you do not have an account, please send an email to bsp-support@humanbrainproject.eu stating your interest in participating in the event, and you will receive an invitation to join the platform.
Request an HBP Account and register for the course here!
  1. If you already have an HBP account, you can directly access registration via the button to the right. Please use your HBP credentials to log in.
  2. If you do not have an account yet, you will need to create a (free) HBP Community account, which also allows you access to the infrastructure demonstrated during the event. Please follow one of the options below to receive an invitation:
    • If you are not an HBP member, request an invitation by sending a short email to support@humanbrainproject.eu.
    • If you are an HBP member, please contact your SP manager.
    • You can also be invited by a current HBP account holder.
  3. After sending your request, you will receive an invitation to join the HBP Collaboratory and create an account. Use your log-in details to access the registration after clicking the button to the right.
If you experience any problems with the registration process, please contact the event organisers at education@humanbrainproject.eu.
