Dynamics and distributed cognition in a large-scale brain

I will discuss recent development of large-scale modeling of mammalian neocortex, which is based on mesoscopic directed- and weighted inter-areal connectivity data but goes beyond structure towards dynamics and distributed processes. An organizational principle is macroscopic gradients of biological properties across the cortical mantle. This idea challenges conventional graph theoretical analysis, and provides a mechanism for the emergence of novel functions in different parts of the cortex.
